BIMA Unlocks the UK's Digital Front Door
BIMA asked one of its own members to rebuild the website of the UK digital industry. Subvert Studio did the research first, built on Blutui, and delivered in around a third of the planned time. Here's what agency leaders can take from it.

Building a website for the body that represents the UK’s digital industry is a funny old brief. Your client is also your peer group. Every agency, dev and CMO in the UK will look at the finished site and form an opinion about it. Kinda like cooking dinner for a room full of Michelin-star chefs.
That was the job Subvert Studio took on for BIMA. I've watched a lot of agency projects over 30-odd years in adland, and this one is worth unpacking. Not only because of the tech. Also because of the decisions the agency made around it.
This case study is a masterclass in tech selection. Most agencies deliver a wide spread of work. Microsites, campaign pages, corporate sites, the odd web app. Spin up a different stack for each one and control slowly slips away from the agency.
Subvert Studio went the other way. One standardised foundation, an Agency Web Ecosystem, that keeps the agency in control of four things:
Code. The front end stays the agency's, not locked inside someone else's builder.
Talent. Developers and designers spend their hours on craft, not setup.
Project. One consistent way of building, whatever the brief.
Margin. Predictable costs, AI included, so the quote holds up when the job is done.
Keep those four in mind as you read. They show up at every turn.
The brief: forty years of digital depth
As BIMA entered its 40th year, Matt Sullivan and the team decided on a full rebuild. The website is BIMA's front door. It recruits members and partners and keeps current members engaged. The goal was a member-centred, task-led site that showed the value of joining.
The catch was BIMA's own strength. It offers a lot, and members can pick and choose how they get involved. Great once you're in. Confusing when you're standing outside.
"What makes BIMA special is its breadth of offering, but naturally that also means it's a complicated proposition for new members."
Matt Sullivan, Managing Director, BIMA
I reckon most agency leaders will recognise that one. It's the same problem we have with our own credentials pages. We do a lot, so we say a lot, and the prospect leaves none the wiser.
Research before pixels
Subvert Studio is a BIMA member itself, so the team knew the community. They still didn't assume. Ben Perkins and the crew interviewed recently joined members about how they decided to sign up.
"They could cherry-pick how they got involved. But it was also the most confusing part. With so much on offer, where do you start?"
Ben Perkins, Managing Director, Subvert Studio
That one insight shaped the whole build. A new site structure that simplifies the offer and the sign-up journey, wrapped in a fresh, future-facing take on the BIMA brand.
Nothing fancy about it. Talk to the people who joined. Ask why. Then design. IMO it's the first line item to get cut when budgets tighten, and it's the bit that made this project.
Where the time went
Arnas Sebeckis, Subvert Studio's front-end developer, came to Blutui from a WordPress background. He used Blutui's MCP integration to handle the routine development work, including how it interpreted the designs responsively.
"The MCP integration saved us considerable time up front with development tasks."
Arnas Sebeckis, Frontend Developer, Subvert Studio
Subvert Studio delivered the BIMA site in around a third of the planned time. Good news for any agency P&L. But here's the bit I want agency leaders to sit with.
The time saved didn't vanish into a smaller invoice. It didn't get swallowed by the next job either. Arnas put it back into polishing the design and the experience. Into craft.
That's the difference between AI as a cost cutter and AI as a talent multiplier. As Tyler Burbage, our UK Agency Lead, puts it, most agencies don't lose time on the creative work. They lose it in the gaps between tools. Setup, integration, hosting, maintenance. Repeated on every project, for every client. Drop AI into that fragmented stack and you don't fix it. You get AI spaghetti.
Take the gaps away and the hours land where clients notice them.
Five things agency leaders can take from it
Research is the brief. Subvert Studio's best design decision came from a handful of member interviews, not a moodboard. Protect that line item.
Track where the hours go, not only how many. If your team spends its week on setup and plumbing, that's margin leaking out of every project.
Bank the AI dividend in craft. Faster delivery is nice. Better work at the same pace is how you win the next pitch and keep the client.
Give developers control. Arnas came from WordPress and was productive fast because the front end stayed his. We call that createControl.
Build for the next phase, not the launch. BIMA now has a foundation it can keep extending as member needs change. No replatforming in two years' time.
What comes next
The launch is the starting point. Subvert Studio already has plans to build on the experience for new and existing members.
On our side, remote MCP lands in mid-November. Agency teams will connect to Blutui through the Claude connector, or the AI models of their choice. Content updates first, straight from the model's interface. Full builds after that. Same idea as the BIMA project: the routine work handled, the people freed up for the good stuff. And the agency picks the model, at costs it can predict.
Subvert Studio is also now a Blutui Labs partner, focused on in-house brand and marketing teams in the UK. Which tells you something. An agency built one site on the Agency Web Ecosystem and decided to build a part of its business on it.
BIMA exists to help agencies navigate change, and Matt says that uncertainty is the number one concern he hears from members. This project is a small, real answer to it. A talented agency doing what it does best, with the production grind handled behind the scenes.
If you'd like to see how it works, book a Fly-Through. Always happy to chat.
