Scaling an agency without losing the plot: Graeme Blake on The MAP Room

Our CEO Graeme Blake sat down with Stuart Brown on The MAP Room podcast for the second episode in their summer series on agency growth, joined by Tyler Burbage, our UK agency lead.

Scaling an agency without losing the plot: Graeme Blake on The MAP Room

The conversation covers a problem most agency owners will recognise the moment they hear it described: growth that looks great from the outside and feels like chaos on the inside.

Here's what they get into.

The 17-person agency that was making money and losing its mind
Graeme spent close to 30 years running independent full-service and digital agencies, growing his last one to 17 people. From the outside it looked like a success story. Internally, every new client brief meant a different scope, a different technology, and a different team to run it. He explains how that pattern, repeated across dozens of projects, quietly buried the agency in overhead nobody had budgeted for.

Technology fragmentation, and why it's not just a "you" problem

Graeme talks about a road trip he took to agencies across the UK, US and Southeast Asia after hitting this wall, and how every single one described the exact same issue: siloed tools, siloed teams, and no system holding it together underneath. He calls it technology fragmentation, and argues AI is about to recreate the same problem at a much bigger scale unless agencies change how they build.

What a 36-hour project looks like in 50 minutes

Stuart and Graeme walk through a real case study: a UK education provider's website project, quoted at 32 to 36 hours by the client's existing agency, delivered through Blutui in just over 50 minutes. They unpack what that kind of margin recovery actually does to a studio's capacity, and why most agencies are leaving that value on the table.

Why "AI means it should cost less" is the wrong conversation

One of the sharper exchanges in the episode is about pricing. Graeme makes the case that faster delivery through AI and platform tooling should mean agencies charge more, not less, and explains why so many are talking themselves into the opposite. Stuart pushes back with the client-side view, and the two work through where value-based pricing actually holds up.

The three ways agencies build digital products, and why two of them are broken

Graeme breaks down the three routes agencies typically take to deliver digital work: building an internal team they don't fully understand, outsourcing everything and absorbing the admin risk, or cobbling together off-the-shelf tools without thinking through the impact. He explains which one Blutui was built to replace, and why.

There's a lot more in the full 50 minutes, including the headcount myth still driving agency pricing decisions, and what happens to a project once AI-generated code needs to actually go live.
